Hi, My starter motor has just packed in and i am not sure what type to get as a replacement, I have a 1300 metro engine in my 1986 mini. I have looked on various site and there seems to be two types Pre Engaged and another type which has completely slipped my mind (have a bad day to long in the rain)

Can anybody please steer me in the right direction, Help. :proud:

Regards

If the solenoid is piggy-back on the starter motor it's pre-engaged. If the solenoid is a separate unit on the inner wind it's inertia.

An 'inertia' starter looks like this:

A 'Pre-engaged' starter looks like this:

Inertia starters require a wing mounted solenoid, whereas the Pre-engaged type (which was fitted to later models) has the solenoid built onto the back of the motor, as you can see from the picture.

i dnt see why not but am pretty sure you would have to do some sort of mod to the wires

They are NOT a direct replacement - the ring gear on the flywheel has a different number of teeth and a different tooth profile. If you really don't want to change the wiring, you'll need to change the flywheel ring gear.

balls, ok wiring change it is, any ideas how? i assume that the difference between the 2 is the fact that the solenoid is either attatched to the body or the starter, so then the brown power lines connect to the power terminal of the solenoid, and then the white/red ignition wire then attatches to the other pole of the solenoid?? or do i have to put a relay into system?
