Hi all i am looking to change my points to an electronic system but am overwhelmed by the choice of different kits.I have seen ones from Aldon, Lumenition and fire control + others, can anyone recommend a good system? I am also looking to change my HT leads, spark plugs and coil, what are peoples recommendations? At the time of writing my engine is a standard A+ 998 in good condition but my plan is to eventually fit a HIF 38 and a stage one tuning kit.

Cheers All

Nick

There is a cheap kit for about 7 quid that had a massive thread about it, can't remember the general consensus.

I run a metro eletronic dizzy on my mini with good effects, just the advance curve is out. Regarding the coil if it works don't change it there is absolutely no need to change a working coil whatsoever.
This is however you are changing to eletronic ignition where you will need a 12V coil. I run the ngk r range with good effects also but other people have different preferances and high resistive silicone HT leads are good too.

But if you want to go the whole hog go megajolt :shifty:

The coil may depend on whose ign kit you use. There isn't much to be gained by fitting sports coils on road cars. The standard one is well up to the job and it's the spark plug gap that effects how strong the spark is. Have you found the thread about the bargain britpart electronic kit someone found? You'd probably want resistor plugs NGK BPR6ES but that would depend on the leads resistance too.

I've just order a Britpart electronic ignition - £11 including posting. http://tinyurl.com/5gxjd9

I just just bought a new 12v ballast coil for £10 because my old one died. This will be fine for this ignition.

For £11, you can't go wrong. If it's *rubbish* then least you've tried it. If it's fine, then you have an electronic ignition for £11.

I haven't found the thread on this though

This is the thread, I was last one post on it, included some pictures of the kit and a brief run down of how it fitted.

So far fitted the kit to 2 minis 1989 and 1990 both 998's one with a John Cooper conversion, the other Stage one kit, its only been a week so no long term results, but so far, both running fine no problems.
Both still running Ballasted coils, the kit apparantly works with ballast or non ballast, no other parts changed on the ignition. just straight swapped the points for the Britpart kit.

Cheers Irostoke.

I ordered mine on Monday night, still haven't received it.

Took about a week for mine to arrive, they did actually phone me and say they were on back order, seem to be a popular item.

Yes NGK spark plugs (check the Halfords guide for suitability) and as for HT Leads?

Well I recently bought a set of red coloured 'Lumenition' leads from Mini Spares. Their part no. HV22 and their absolutely fantastic. I've driven through tsunamis with them and not had a problem.

Their suitable for all Mini models from 1959 - 1996.
