So what's better, Tuning the A-Series Engine or How to Modify Your Mini, both by David Vizard??

Or are both a must buy?

Thanks,
Adam

I have both, `Tuning The A-Series Engine` just deals with the engine were as `How to Modify your Mini` covers suspension ect both worth buying

Tuning the A-Series Engine is definitely the book for engine tuning, How to Modify Your Mini has nowhere near the level of detail that it offers. If your looking for a lightweight general purpose chassis/engine book then How to Modify Your Mini has some interesting stuff although somewhat outdated probably. The other book to consider is Bill Sollis's Building, Preparing and Racing your Mini.

both are great books, and will teach you a lot. I have both, having read CharlieBrown's copies at university...

I also have two different Mini Haynes and one Metro, and the Haynes restoration manual.

Bill Sollis is next on the list...

How about starting an 'essential book list' with a sentence explaining what each book covers?

Yes, but I think that's already been done too in a thread about the 2 best Mini related books to get?
