Hi guys
I found 2 Austin Montego in a junk yard near my place.
What can they "donate" my mini?

central locking and lecy windows are a good one..
The engines have an ECU, so anything igntion wise is useless, and only the block out of a 1300 is of any use... apart from that, it's mainly trim bits swtiches etc which can be used in a custome mini.

Just quickly on a scale of 1 to 10 how easy would it be for an almost competent person to install electric windows from a montego? I quite fancy that!

It's quite a procedure, read an article on it a number ( 10 or more ) years ago, the reason montego units are used is because they are relatively slim and don't use too much of the door cavity...
But if I remeber rightly, it's just a matter of making some brackets to hold the unit in place and then all the wiring and switches... and control unit.
I was going to try it on petal, but that may have to wait til next year now.

What about the carbs?
what do they use?
what do they use?

I think they all use varying sorts of HIF44, but those with ECU's will be of no use, as the have all sorts of sensors in the engine which modify the carbs mixtures as you drive.
I think the only ones chich will provide anything mechanically useful are the 1300's, even then the gearbox is not undeneath but strapped on the side like other modern cars.

What about the engine numbers?
Will they tell me if they're 1300 or 1600?
Will they tell me if they're 1300 or 1600?

Nah, even the block's useless. You can't turn a conventional gearbox A series block into a sump mounted gearbox A series, the oil pickup isn't compatible among other things. And isn't the oil filter in a silly place on those blocks or something like that?
The carb's are all HIF-E44's if I remember right, which are electronic carbs. They need the ECU to function as the jets and chokes are controlled by stepper motors, I don't think they can be coverted to conventional cable carbs very easily.
Oh, and you'll know if it's the 1300 as it'll look like an A series (although a bit of a weird one). If you've gone as far as getting the engine number you'll know if it's the same engine. The 1600 is completely different.

ok
So the montego's useless...

Mechanically pretty useless, but like Guessworks said a lot of Austin Rover trim is fairly universal accross the range.

What about the distributor?
is it electronic and usable on a mini?

1300 Monty might give you an unleaded head that'd be worth having
Dizzy is Lucas electronic: would fit but wouldn't like to say about the advance curve
I'd say the carb is worth looking at if only as a cheap source of spares all the major moving bits are the same, you could even have a go at knicking the whole setup, it's not too complicated just an air temp sensor throttle switch and the ecu are the additional bits.
I wouldn't mind the wiper delay unit and column switches if they're reasonable.
