Following on from the question I posted the other day reference my clutch disengaging, I have now sorted the clutch out.

I was told by a reliable source that Mini clutches are prone to the plates sticking if left for prolonged periods of time, and since my Mini hasn't been a runner for over 2 years, I think that counts as a prolonged period. Anyway, he said to stick it into gear and start the engine with my foot on the clutch pedal, and turn it over until I start moving keeping my foot on the clutch until the clutch became unstuck. Well, it worked and soon I was cruising around in circles in the car park at my garage.

Now here comes the problem, I thought that I was in 1st gear, but I wasn't, I was in 3rd, and it became evident that I can only select 3rd, 4th and reverse gears.

Anyway, I cabbied around the car park for a bit using the gears I had, but now there is a knocking noise coming from somewhere in the engine/gearbox/clutch, not sure where, it is idling erratically and is prone to cutting out.

What can the problem be,the questions I have are

1. Why can't I get it into 1st or 2nd gear and

2. What can the noise be?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!

After 2 years of rebuilding I was hoping to get her in for an MOT within the next couple of weeks but without all the gears it seems unlikely.

Any advice welcome

Hi..check roll pin at linkage end to g/box has been put in properly as this may stop you from selecting 1st-2nd................ :(

Yes mate, already checked that as I know that this can sometimes foul the gearbox.

Can it be persuaded into 1st or 2nd without the engine running? I'd expect the stick to at least try if it wasn't a fault with the selector somewhere.

The knock is a bit vague does it happen when the car is stood idling, is it related to engine revs, does holding the clutch in make a difference?

Start by giving the ignition the once over to get it running better.

It doesn't appear to, I don't even have to lift the stick to put it into reverse which seems a bit odd!

As for the knocking, it only seems to happen when she is stood idling, if you apply revs the the noise dissappears, can't recall if holding down the clutch makes a difference but I don't think it did, I will have to check tomorrow.

As for the ignition, all parts have been renewed as part of the rebuild so I don't think that that is at fault. The noise only started when I sorted out the clutch.

Confused.

sounds like the gear selector, lifting the stick makes no difference to the box itself. If holding the clutch in stops the noise you'd be looking at the clutch or transfer gears.

Are the transfer gears a big job?

Could be pretty major but I doubt they're to blame, out of the 2 the clutch is more likely if you've just had to give it some wellying - but could be anything.

The plate on the bottom of the gearstick selector box is probably on the wrong way round... try lifting the gearstick and trying to get intoo 1st and 2nd :dontgetit:

unless of course it's a remote box when you don't lift the gearstick for reverse anyway.

Well Ethel, I managed to get over to the garage today in between cutting the grass and other stuff.

I have been able to establish a couple of things. Firstly that I can't get it into 1st or 2nd when the engine isn't running, the stick just physically refuses to go that far over to even try to put it into 1st or 2nd. Secondly that the knocking noise does stop when the clutch pedal is pressed...... any ideas?

I had a problem a looong time back where I had alot of trouble getting the stick across the gate (first problem I got sorted on here actually)...Although that was whenever I went from 1/2 to 3/4 or R, and it would go with some persuading.

The solution involved selecting reverse and then repeatedly whacking the stick forwards until the gear selection was fine again. Something to do with the reverse idler, a bush and thwacking it back into place again..

Could be worth a go, don't go too mad because you'll crack the diff cover though...

Sounds a bit excessive but I'll give it a go.

Thanks mate

You were right Guessworks, the plate on the bottom of the selector was the wrong way round :D . Just changed it around and I now have all gears and I now have to lift the stick to put it in reverse.

Just got to find out what the knocking noise is now and the additional problem of why she will not start now.

Thanks for all your help and advice.

Mark
