been told its not the timing as it runs great......
i made it a little more retarded, then took it around the block and there was no power there, got home and water was pouring from some where... made it more advanced then topped the water up and its been ok since,,,, why is this?

so the spluttering is the mixture on the carb? where is the pin? and should i bother trying to fix as its being sold, as i said it runs well etc....

nice 1!!

This is called run-on.

Can be caused by a mixture of things, the main suspects are:

**The head needs removing and de-coking (coke is a carbon deposit left by combustion) with a wire brush. (most likely)
**Non-standard cam that is poorly suited the engine.

been told its not the timing as it runs great

Who told you it wasn't the timing? did they check the timing properly? just because a car appears to run great, doesn't mean it's in dire need of a tune up.

In the mean time here's a little tip that can help a little on some cars. Everytime you park up, leave the engine running for 30 secs before turning off, this brings the engine temp down just enough to help combat run-on and might stop it being so severe.

If it runs great then the timing isn't ever going to be a fator unless you have checked with a timing gun? It could be that your water ways are a little silted up in the cylinder head or water pump isn't effcient as it could be.

As retor 10's says leave the carb to idle before turning off this helps dearly, don't forget older engines need a little more love and attention then say something being churned out by the japenese (just for example)

Run on, can sometimes be a mystery, its usually the factors mentioned above, i would check the timing, and then the mixture you could be running a bit rich wich has sooted up your head etc. You can get detergent at a garage, wich can sometimes aid the problem.
If you leave your car before turning off, and it still runs on, then your going to have to stall it gently.
Run on is not good for the bearings in the engine, and a stall is less harmfull. So once you,ve parked put into 4th and put your handbrake on, then gentle take your foot off the clutch till the engine stops.

yes, Redex

what's the carb? Hif mixture screw turns clockwise to make it richer, screw the jet further out of a HS.

Yup Redex, also i believe the premium Fuels have a detergent in them that aids in cleaning of the combustion Chamber.
On an HS carburettor to lean the mixture you want to turn the jet so its getting higher and compressing on the spring. so Anti-clockwise

where is the pin on the carb?

oo and the water coming out was only when its parked downhill, I didnt top it up this time, and it hasnt done it since.... I think it might have been excess water in there and it was jst leveling out on the hill...... any thoughts?

thanks

Mine does this,i'll have to try the 30 sec thing, but mines running very rich it idles at about 1200 so the first thing i'm going to do is get it tuned and hopefully this will sort the problem out.

Ahh, running rich will cause this however, if its running that rich you WILL soot up the cylinder, and you wont get rid off the run on, until the Head is de-coked, so get it tuned soon!

There is one step missing from how to gently stall the engine. You coordinate letting out the clutch with turning off the ignition switch/key.
