you need to put a voltmeter across the battery terminals with the engine running - over 14 volts and your alt is fine. disconnect battery and put votlmeter across terminals - if its less than 12.5 v then its prolly knackered. charge it overnight and see how it goes. give it a good run ie more than 1/2hr then disconnect battery and check again. if still less than 12.5V then its duff. if its over 3-4 year old then its on its way out.
check the the main battery cable from the boot to the starter. they can split and the copper cable breaks down. it'll be 13 yrs old if original so could be duff too

hi there mate thanks for the info! I think the battery is slowly losing charge so it could be dud ! But could a dud battery stop the alt from sending the volts back to the battery?
P.s i will test these things out as soon as i get home mate thanks dave
