What happens if you do not use lead replacement additives in a lead head?? I know the long term effects of this, but i am wondering on the shortterm effects. Would performance be effected?
Just trying to diagnose a lose of power problem on my mini. It drove fine (in fact brilliantly) for the first 2 days i had it. Ans then yesterday i wasnt very happy. Could this be because when i filled it up i didnt use any additive??? Pls help i hate being overtaken

The ignition will need retarding a little as you will have tendancy to pink ( or pre ignite ) also the previous two days it was probably still swilling about with a but of additive in the tank...

Were you using an octane boosting additive ?

what fuel did you use? I tend to find if you use a decent fuel, combined with an octane boosting lead replacement additive it works wonders.

My lethal combination is Shell Optimax and Castrol Valvemaster Plus. Its well worth the extra pennies on the fuel, and the £11.99 roughly every 3 months for the Valvemaster.

I've weaned the Polo onto Optimax, and the performance gain from when I first got it is noticable, not in pure accleration, but in terms of smoothness and pick-up.

I noticed the performance of my motor is not great, so I am gonna try some Valvemaster or similar in it. I was told its an unleaded head, but I still like the idea of the octane boost of the additive.
Lets see how it goes tonight, first run!

Yep, I run the same mixture as Minis84, but I've never run the 1425 on anything different (due to needing the high octane rating), so I can't comment on any improvement...

Cheers for all help. I now have valvemaster additive and from now on will use optimax or similar. The guy that had the car before me used optimax and octane boost additive so i better carry on the trend. I havent done many miles in it yet so it hasnt worked its way through completely yet but there is some difference. Cheers again
