trying to replace front wheel bearing but no-one seems to stock them past 96 models. is there a difference between the bearings on mpi and spi minis?

Unless rover changed the hub or the driveshaft flange they should be the same, but i cannot say for certain,

hmm don't want to go offtopic or be deliberatly obtuse here... but surely stating that 'unless rover changed the design they should be the same' is basically stating that 'if they changed the design, the design is changed'.

front wheel brgs

from what i can remember fromt wheel brg's are the same unless you have the sports model

and then you use tappered roller brg's,

or these

On disc braked Minis (not counting the useless early Cooper discs) the hubs/cv joints are all the same. When BMC brought out the Cooper S they upgraded the cv joints and the hubs and they used Timken taper roller bearings. More recently a cheaper cartridge type ball bearing was introduced on the Metro and was used on newer Minis. Either will fit all these cvs and hubs - but my view is that the more expensive taper roller bearing is the better option.
