thought id get on with trying to clean the engine tonight. made difficult by the facted i cant run the engine so its stone cold and therefore the gunk is only half as affective. i was also trying to clean it after the gunk was applied using a nylon brush and a cloth. i suppose i'm going to have to borrow my grandads pressure washer?

i did however, upon cleaning, find this crack behind the starter motor:

I pressume that will need replacing then? :w00t: the starter motor took a lot of the force, it was cracked itself (i say cracked, it pretty much just fell apart) wasnt expecting to see that though. not sure how well the pictures will show it.

can just about make it out. but would need to have a closer look etc to judge whether it is bad enough to need replacing, if the starter bolts up ok and there is no chance of anything falling into the clutch area i would leave it be :w00t:

just a little update.

ok, due to the fact i may be getting an auto mini and converting it to manual, i have decided to strip and check my 998, rather than just painting it and selling it quickly. i already have most of the stuff needed so shouldnt be too much bother (unless i find something i dont want to see).

thanks mike!

and nothing secret david, just a shell mike knows about that might interest me :shifty: ill pm you details tomorrow.
yes please, would be really useful! :shifty: got a pressure washer today so will hopefully be able to really blast away the dirt on the block. need to block up all the holes first though :( any ideas for the manifold holes on the head? painted the inlet manifold and carb brackets the other day. looks goooood :shifty: not sure what to do with the carb though. ive got one all cleaned up but will it be ok as i put all the bits in the dishwasher :shifty:

any help on getting carbs as shiney and clean as possible?

not sure about getting the carb clean, maybe some autosol or silverpolish (stuff your nan always used in the candlestick holders).

When i blasted my engine i think i just crammed plastic bags in the ports and tried not to blast them directly. :shifty:

P.S. Are you getting jealous yet heather? :shifty:

Maybe :shifty: :( Henrietta is having an MOT today :shifty: slightly worrying lol and I nearly had a smack up this morning on my way to the garage!

Country roads + Black ice on a down hill slope = fiat punto skidding right infront of me! :shifty: He missed me by inches!

How's things Oli?

ok ill do that then. my dad suggested gaffa tape but i wasnt sure if it would be enough. so i'll do both :(

on my rebuilt carb i used a metal cleaner/polish of some kind. ill get autosol and try that. worked quite well but i couldnt really get in the messy corners and it took ages. hence i put it in the dishwasher :P

any more feedback on whether that carb will still be ok to use? put it in at 70 degrees i think

P.S. Are you getting jealous yet heather? :)

Maybe ^_^ ^_^ Henrietta is having an MOT today :errr: slightly worrying lol and I nearly had a smack up this morning on my way to the garage!

How's things Oli?

oooh how did your MOT go? hope she passed with flying colours. :P im missing all this icy fun! i remember having some scary scary moments in baby last year though.

I'm ok thank you. hows things with you? unfortunately i've contracted a serious case of man-flu so ill have to wait a bit longer to go out and clean the engine. ill concentrate on getting the things i need to replace on the engine

dont forget if there is something you need for your 998 i have a runner in mine at the moment and i should be swapping it for the 1293 around christmas time.
i have some autosol if you want it, i also recommend purchasing a dremel tool with the polishing bits, it will save so much time in the long run and you will be amazed at how perfect the finish will be :o
im going to put ultra shiny aluminium tape over my inlet manifold and around all fuel pipes and hoses to reflect the heat.
i have 2 big rolls of the stuff so im sure i will have some spare :)

I don't know yet, as I've not heard anything from the garage. I know she'll fail as her electric system is all messed up, all the wires are the wrong colours fior the right job :o Thanks to her previous owner! And amongst other problems, her horn will only work if her headlights are switched on, which isn't really a problem for me as I tend to drive with my lights on anyway due to her dark colour. Her indicators are a little tempramental atm too  And there's a small rubber part that needs replacing as a matter of course anyway at the bottom of the drive shaft.

So already I know she will fail, I'm just praying there's nothing else or more serious wrong with her!

I'm ok ta, got a nasty head cold and sore throat but otherwise ntb! Glad to see things are moving along nicely, can't wait to see the finished product! Have you got another car for whilst the repairs are going on?

cheers andrew. my need to buy a few bits and bobs off you. are you going to be selling it? could use the gearbox etc for mine, the block for my home made flow bench, and the head as my first modification on said home made flow bench ;D but depends if i have space for any of that :techsupport: i blame some bloke called vizard for planting that idea in my head!

do you know yet heather? at least those are all easily sortable things, despite being annoying. and is that rubber part the bump stop? or a gator or seal? if its the bump stop i went through an mot without one, i doubt theyll notice, infact i still dont have one. was trying to get one then bang.

hope youve recovered from your head cold too. just think yourself lucky your immune from manflu :D yeah me neither. still a long way off though. just want to start cracking on. nope, no car yet. everything i find goes the day after i enquire about it! so annoying :) found a gem the other day. a '78 vauxhall viva hc with rostyles on in a lovely yellow. best bit was the number plate 'TMF 95S' :) sent an email asking for more pics then next thing i know someone else has bought it. got my eye on another though, but not such a nice plate  anyway, really i would like to get a car before i plough money into baby, so its holding it up a bit.

mmmmmmmm :) :D

Yeah I know now, £400 worth of work and labour costs
Its mostly electrical though, Hen's wires are...well...quite frankly...a mess! Lights are playing up so much! Grr!

Worst bit was this - she's got 3 patches of rott on the driver's sill, and because each patch is so close together, I've gotta have the sill replaced, otherwise if the guy weld's it, it'll be even worse next year come MOT time. So cheaper to just replace it now rather than paying for welding and replacement next year.

The little rubber part - it's a steering gaitor! I remembered! hehe need that fitting for it to pass  *sighs*

Love that number plate, pity it's not on a mini! Any particular reason why your not getting a mini for a run around? or do you just want to stay faithful to your Baby?! ;) :o

Head cold is ok, but I'm getting blinding headaches :dontgetit:

Twiglett the dremal is good, what did the salt do to the ally Oli? I use old tooth brushes and a dremal for the finish and to clean I use a bath of gunk and then i blast it with stream sorts it out.
