Hi all,

been offered a Metro essentially for nothing.
What I need to know is will the engine drop into the Mini or will
it need major work / money to do it ?

I know the Metro is a '94, and that the engine is a 1.4 but know very little else about it.

Worth going to get it or not ?

Best wishes
Monty

That'll be a 'K' series not an 'A' series engine. It can be done but with great difficulty.

1.4 will be K series engined, so you'd need a custom subframe from allspeed or somewhere. Alternatively you could make your own.

K-series engine

As above, custom subframe, engine mounts, driveshafts, exhaust, ignition setup/wiring? etc

Can be done, but its not a simple drop in and go like any A-series based metro engine would be.

I'm guessing its a K-series engine if its a 1400cc. Quite a few people have done K-series conversions, so there is plenty of information out there if your willing to have a go. As above, you can buy ready made subframes that will allow you to fit the engine into your mini, saving you some of the hard work.

A good place to start is by doing a search on here or looking on the 16v mini club website.

Depends whether its a GTi or a boggo Metro. The 1.4 8 valve is nowt to shout about. A 1275 A series will run rings round it even with the Metro having five gears

OK - sounds like a non-starter (can't believe I made that pun...)

So now that I'm interested in the whole thing, if I were to go looking for a Metro
which one is 'the one' to go for ?

A series powered, pre H platers. Look for MG, GTa, Vanden Plas, MG Turbo (if your lucky). Non performance models are ok to just not as powerful and a bit less likely to have had its knackers run out. You thinking about an engine swap now bud?

Engine swap... yeah maybe....

Since it was rollling roaded the little rat box goes really well - but...
Having given up a 4 litre jag I just miss that "ooomph" factor.
I know the Mini is never going to compete with the supercharged lunacy of the XK
but I can't help feeling that a nice 1275 or maybe even a 1380 in such a small light car
would give me back that sense of constantly being in genuine danger.
(which I like...)

I dont think a 1380 would be much good as a daily driver. A good 1275 would be much better.

There's no reason a 1380 couldn't be a daily driver, infact the bigger displacemet gives a decent torque increase over a 1275. If you keep the cam sensible it makes a fantastic road motor.

On what planet? Standard 1.4 16V has 90bhp with a very good torque curve there is no 1275 out there that comes anywhere close, I see the onset of A series delusionary syndrome setting in, maybe you need to see a doctor.

I thought a standard rover metro had 75-76 bhp that being the metro S and the Sl the Gta 16v had 90BHP.

I said 8 valve as in non-performance models. I know what the GTi 16 valves are like I have owned about three of them. Maybe you need to see an optician, or start reading the posts properly
