Ive only gone and burnts out the motor on my compressor. Granted it's old but has work hard over many years but im well "intoxicated" now. Problem was that because it runs off a long extension lead from my dad's forge to the worshop it doesnt have enough feed to start the motor back up when it was not been running for a while, to get around this I normally leave the valve open to the motor as to start more frequently to keep the pressure in the tank, but I forgot to this time and closed the workshop forgetting to switch it off. Next thing I know is the electric goes off everywhere and dad shouts "Compressor" So I legged it up the yard and could smell the burning before I got into the workshop. It wasnt on fire but there was a load of black smoke billowing out of it and it was hot enough to fry eggs on!

It's gonna cost me over £100 to get a new 3HP motor now, FFS!!!!!!

Rant over, thanks for listening :)

Wouldn't getting the motor rewound/reconditioned be cheaper?

Doubt it, the motor is pretty big! I'll post a picture in the morning when the smoke has cleared, lol.

For the £100, could you not add a bit more and get a brand new one? (haven't checked the prices of them in a while though)

Single or 3 phase?

Got good motors that size in the skip outside mostly 3-phase

Your extension lead isn't up to it - buy some thicker cable and make up a better one.

I bet you can get a cheaper motor off the bay of E.

How about putting 2 cables 'n plugs on it to make a kind of ring main?

It's a single phase 3HP electric motor that runs at 2800 RPM.

I'm in the same boat! Been trying to track down a motor for my sealey compressor. Finaly managed to get though to there spares department and a new motor is £596!
I can buy the same compressor for £530 new off eBay. Think I'm just gonna go machine mart just got to work out which one now.
