Within the auto unit you have 2 clutch packs with between 2 and 3 clutch plates in each, when the seals get hard oil leaks past them cuasing the clutch pack to slip, this then allows for rapid wear of the plates
The only way to correct this type of fault is a full strip and rebuild ......... recondition.

Unfortunately this is exactly what is happening

sounds expensive, is it worth ebaying a new gearbox in the hope that it will work or just go for a manual engine and box etc?

I think that it would almost certainly be cheaper to go for a replacement manual engine and gearbox than to get the auto box you have reconditioned. Unless, of course, you can recondition it yourself.
If the manual option was your long term plan in any case, I would go for that now.

I would not trust an auto box as far as I could throw it ( and that aint far as they're heavy ) unless it came from a reputable source or with a warranty.
Or you are just feak & weable
