I have a 1981 mini city auto, not driven it before because i was preparing it for the MOT so today i took it to the MOT centre and EVERY time i pulled off the car would shudder and pull of really slow as if i were driving a car with a really slippy clutch. the only way i could pull off without it shuddering would be to just engage drive and let off the brake and apply the accelerator reeeeeally lightly but this meant i was so slow people would get annoyed. Hills and accelerating are difficult to say the least! anyway what could be the problem? im guessing its fubar and i want to stick a manual engine and what not in anyway but its just frustrating. thanks :)

Unfortunately this is exactly what is happening :)

Within the auto unit you have 2 clutch packs with between 2 and 3 clutch plates in each, when the seals get hard oil leaks past them cuasing the clutch pack to slip, this then allows for rapid wear of the plates :)

The only way to correct this type of fault is a full strip and rebuild ......... recondition.

sounds expensive, is it worth ebaying a new gearbox in the hope that it will work or just go for a manual engine and box etc?

I would not trust an auto box as far as I could throw it ( and that aint far as they're heavy ) unless it came from a reputable source or with a warranty.

I love automatics (I have one by choice) and much as it pains me I'd have to agree with Guessworks. There's just no telling with an auto box, even low mileage ones can need serious amounts of attention. You'd really need to get one with a warranty or one that's recently been reconditioned by someone who knows what they're doing.

I think that it would almost certainly be cheaper to go for a replacement manual engine and gearbox than to get the auto box you have reconditioned. Unless, of course, you can recondition it yourself.

If the manual option was your long term plan in any case, I would go for that now.
