Now I've had the mini back for over a week and been getting on with all the fiddly jobs and refitting bits of trim, etc. I've had more than enough time to go over the car several times and spot issues I’m not happy with. Bearing in mind I haven’t driven it since getting it mot'ed and its only done 15 miles tops.

•So far I’ve found rust on underside of bonnet structure, which hasn’t be sanded and has missed paint completely and then lacquered over.

•Bonnet lip still pop riveted and not welded as asked.

•Masking tape lines on all edges of the bonnet, scuttle and both door edges.

•Passenger side) front wing to front panel seam, filler not sanded properly, sanding marks and deep scratches visible under the paint. Paint also looks hazy and cloudy.

•Paint on scuttle cracking.

•Passenger door fits in such away in such the upper window frame doesn’t even touch the door seal, if door is adjusted further in, it then sits too far in in relation to the quarter panel. The bottom although very hard to see (but can feel) is also wavy/dented.

•Rough texture on passenger side inner door, were its not been flatted and polished properly.

•Driver’s side rear companion bin, been painted and then what looks likes be flogged with a load of chains, as it’s all chipped.

•Both front seam trims, poor fit and finish and the n/s won’t stay pushed onto the front wing. Only one clip used at top and bottom and middle of seam trim. I supplied 30 brand new ones, so what’s been done with the one that haven’t been used?

•Paint cracking on drivers door frame.

•Paint run and cracking on drivers door step, poor filler work also.

•Missed paint/rust starting on drivers side inner a panel/door shut/hinge area.

•Boot lid, boot hinges and unfinished filler on inside along with rough textured paint.

•Bits of metal in the paint on the front panel above the bumper on the flat sections below both indicators.

•And the Bottom of both doors haven’t been lacquered.

Ill obviously try and get pics, but some are as the camera won’t pick them up. And it goes without saying I’ll be taking the car back to him sometime next week to see what he has to say. I will for certain won’t be leaving it with him and refuse to pay any extra for work that should have been done right the first time.

Some of the pics I'd taken that did come out.

These are the masking tape lines I have all around the bonnet, front wings, scuttle and both doors. I'm guessing that they might be easily removed with some 2000 wet and dry and a bit of compound. But then I shouldn't really have to finish off someone else's work.

37422025910_b8979cd38d_c.jpg

The rust under the bonnet. There wasn't any rust on any of the panels/car when I dropped it off. But even so why wasn't this sanded off and also why has it missed being painted? I'm guessing laziness and just rushed. Thing is what other areas of the car are like this, but now under the paint?

The fish eyes and bits of metal in the pain along the front panel.

The nearside front panel the wing seam. with the bad filler work (not mine) textured paint and scratches, witch are just about visible in the pics.

And finally the cracks in the paint on the drivers door and nearside wing/front panel seam, possible shrinkage?

That's a terrible finish! They should be ashamed and made to start again... I do hope there isn't anything hiding under the paint tho.

My brother had some problems with his paint too, but it only was apparent after 1.5 years so wasn't covered by garantee. Doesn't your body shop guarantee there work?! We do where I work!

I'll find out sometime during the week when I take the car back and point out everything I'm not happy with, And what he suggestions on resoling them. Hopefully it doesn't come down to a public slagging off, Facebook etc.  It's already caused arguments within the household, with me apparently being too picky. But if this is after a week of it being sat in a dry garage and not driven, what would it be like after being driven for 6 months. I know for the budget not to have expect a show quality paint job, but there are areas that even I could have finished to a better standard.

I still can't get the camera to pic out some of the paint defects, but then some of them aren't apparent unless you notice or looking for them.

I still haven't taken it back to the guy yet, as I'm still awaiting on him putting the pictures he's taken onto a disk for me. But apart from the minor paintwork faults, I did take a load of pics of the car a few days ago.

Well I finally got round to taking the mini back to the guy for his opinion. I didn’t pick out all the faults, just the main ones and I also picked up the disk with all the picks he’s taken on. As at first he was a little stand-off ish saying it far exceeded what I paid and that the bits I wasn’t happy with, I was being picky. But then when I pointed out that to find rust and bubbling paint less than two weeks after a respray, he didn’t really have an answer.

The main bits I pointed out were the rust under the bonnet. He didn’t seem that concerned and thought I was picky as it’s under the bonnet. But the rust wasn’t there before the respray.

The masking tape lines, which unfortutaly won’t disappear completely as the difference in paint mean the shades are off. But I’m not too bothered about having to flat them with 2000 and polish, so at least the lines aren’t as obvious.

The Passenger side front wing to front panel seam with the sanding marks and hazy paint. Unfortutaly the whole front wing and front panel will need repainting so it all blends in, which he didn’t seem that happy about.

The paint cracks on the driver’s door. Unsure of those, he seemed to think the one nearest the door latch was a scratch in the paint, so not too bothered about. But thinks the one of the front is another masking line, but there’s already the brown tell tale of rust and there’s also some bubbling on the inside of the door in the same area.

The missed area behind the drivers a panel that has already started to rust, he’s just suggested brushing some paint on. So looks like, I’ll have to remove the door, sand it back and blob the paint on myself to do a slightly better job of it.

And the cracking and bubbling of the paint on the rear edge of the passenger side door, And on the driver’s door step. Both of which he can’t see why it’s done that, but did seam slightly more willing to fix it sooner rather than later. As it would just be localised repairs rather than spreading to the exterior panels.

So at the moment I’m just waiting on a phone call from him in the next week or so of when to bring it back down for his to have a go at fixing the paint issues. And so far he hasn’t mentioned anything about any extra for the extra paint and body work.

😐...

He's the reason my profession gets a bad name, that's bad work and should redo all of it.

Hope he gets the main stuff sorted and he'd better not charge you to fix HIS faults!

Other than that, it's a very nice mini you've got there! 😁

Well if he does try charging to fix his screw ups, I’ll refuse him doing any of the work, save up and take it elsewhere for all the faults to be fixed. As I just don’t trust the guy. As the last time I was down before the mot he claimed he had a moggy minor that had been there for months ready to be sent off and blasted, which was still there outside under a tarp. And a metallic blue/gunmetal chevy chevelle ss for a ‘full respray’, witch 3 weeks later was nowhere to be seen, based on the fact it took him 3 weeks to rust doing the mini. And that's without including the further digging I've been doing.

He was first off trying to claim that what I got for the money way a five and half k respray for 1200. To which I pointed out for that I would have expected for that the whole underside, engine bay, full interior and boot to have been done for that and that I'd have expected it to be mint/concourse standard.

Unless he was trying to exaggerate it by trying to include the work I’ve put in with stripping the car before hand, cleaning, replacing or repainting everything and then refitting it all back on.

But he still couldn’t really argue on the cracking and rust bubbles after only a few weeks. I’m an honest guy and if any of the faults were down to my work I’d hold my hands up. Except that he tried to claim the rust under the bonnet must have already been there (it bloody wasn't), but then why wasn’t it sanded off? The crack on the door must be the door skin flexing, but the welds are straight and not diagonal like the cracks. And the door step must be down to my welding again, but the welding was done a year in advance and driven with no issues with cracking. And then the areas would only crack the paint, not bubble up if there wasn’t rust underneath.

Although thanks to the picks I’ve now got. As I suspected he had left it sitting around for 5 weeks before doing anything going by the date tags on the pics. And the problem areas like the front wing, which he claims were down to my prep. I now have pics of those areas stripped back to bare metal removing all of my prep.

That's odd I seam to be missing the finished welding pics of the drivers door step on my file, but I seam to have uploaded them to hear and Flickr. But the picks of my welding on the doorstep.

28097649731_f59ee29663_c.jpg

And the pics of the cracking and bubbling.

Looks to me if it was my welds that had cracked, I would of had a crack going across the door step...

the car looks good but hose little problems are not all that little! if he has any respect for his own reputation he will fix them without any questions asked, especially as you have his pictures showing he had the problem areas to bare metal and its clearly his prep that's the problem!

hope you get it sorted without too much drama!

Sounds like a right PITA, especially after having to wait as long as you did compared to what he originally quoted! As above, it's looking great in the photos, but shame about the problem areas you have since spotted and hopefully he'll be rectifying them without even mentioning extra money!!

That’s part of the problem, because the rest of it looks so good the bad bits really stand out. But then some of the issues, I’m guessing most people wouldn’t even notice or be too bothered about.
But I’ve now uploaded the pics from his disk. Unfortutaly I don’t have many of the car before hand, but I do have these two of as it was when I dropped it off on the 7th of august. I had to disassemble it under a car port, as it decided to rain halfway though.
