Unfortunately Clio Clive was deemed to beyond economical repair this week after being towed back to the garage by GreenFlag. The combination of dodgy electrics and knackered fuel injectors means that he is destined for eBay Spares and Repairs section in the New Year.

I'm changing jobs in a couple of month, so I just need something to tide me over for the moment, so meet Marco (not my choice of names), 1.9CL VW Polo with 117K on the clock. Purchased this morning from the wife of the local vicar (not making that up) for the £350!

The Massey Ferguson red matches the tractor sound of the 1.9D engine! and you have to love the "entirely standard" VW interior. Why do VW's have their own smell, must be the plastic?

Any VW enthusiasts need not worry, I will make sure any mods will age appropriate and tastefully selected for what is obviously a future classic, so far I'm thinking fluffy dice and my name across the top of the windscreen  ;D

The only downside is some of the paintworks clear coat is coming off but its not something I would probably do anything with, although if anyone has any cheap suggestions?

Enjoy

That lacquer problem occurs on a lot of VWs of that age. The good news is that it doesn't seem to affect the paint underneath and you find rust breaking through anytime soon. They aren't the most interesting cars but are well built and go on forever with basic maintenance, £350 sounds a bargain.

Glad to see you all are all underwhelmed by my purchase as I am myself..... :D

I have to say as utterly boring as it is, I can't fault anything under the bonnet, it's immaculate.

One slight odd issue, when turning under braking you can feel a click through the steering column and sometimes the brake pedal, any thoughts?

The wifey had a red one of them but in petrol guise. Plain jane but robust and very rarely went wrong. The lacquer you could trim the edges back, flat back and flash some more lacquer over it as a stop gap sort of thing.

Yeah boi, banded steels, cut the springs, sticker bomb it and then grind all the paint off the bonnet so it goes rusty.

That would be a unique look...........................

I had a lovely 1995 polo called Ralph back in the Alps, they go on forever. As far as I know he's still beetling around up there - 170k on the clock and not a garage trip needed in 3 years of abuse, harsh winters, salt.... Bombproof! Enjoy the little guy, hope he grows on you :)

Cracked pedal box? Common fault on Lupos - not sure about polos

And gearbox mainshaft bearings.

On all 6n2 vw's.

I'm envious though. I searched ages for one of those, but to no avail.

I'm getting grief from Mrs M&P for my apparent lack of love for him, well its our first of our daily commutes tomorrow, my 100 mile round trip to Leeds, lets see if we have bonded after that  O_O
