The cost of petrol per mile driven compared with the average earnings is probably lower than it has ever been.

Modern cars are just so fuel-efficient and petrol costs are very low (at the moment anyway).

I was reading a road test of a Cortina 1500 GT from 1966 and it said that the consumption was an 'excellent' 26 mpg overall. That from a 1.5 litre car with a max. speed of about 95 mph. The average 1.5 litre Ford will do well over 40 mpg, top out at something like 110 mph and be reliable too.

My 998 Cooper in 1964 would give between 34 & 37 mpg. My current 3-litre road car gives 35 mpg cruising at 80+ mph, will do 150 mph and weighs almost 2 tonnes.

I filled up today for 95.7p per litre (but I was also using a 12p off per litre token from Sainsburys because I spent £50.00 in the shop so cheating :-)).

Yeah that's cheating miniminx.

And in reply to Cooperman, my 1.6 diesel focus takes about £60 to fill up and will do over 600 miles easily.

Nah, the best around here is an extortionate £1.119!! I heard on the news thought that the cheapest place in the UK is supposed to be Darlington, at £1.083

108.9p at my local i think.

Will be lovely to see it go below the pound in a week or so.

Not so lovely when it shoots up to £1.40 again though in a few weeks.

The lowest I've seen here is 76.2p a litre at todays fx rate. Almost a 20% drop in a year, and that also incorporates the equivalent of road tax.
