must admit - a lot of the diesel vehicles over here seem worse for smoke than they were 20 years ago

This is my thinking, how different are modern engines from one company to another?

So they inject wee-wee into the exhaust to negate NOx?!  That's a new one!  I read about this today, naughty VW!

No, they are supposed to inject it but turn it off when not on an emissions test!

My neighbour across the street has a heavy duty Ford pick up (F-250 or 350) diesel. He told me that his has the urea injection. When it was running out of the fluid, he got a warning message to take the truck to the dealer for servicing which he decided to ignore. Some days later he got a message to promptly and safely stop the truck that the engine would shut down. And that was it, it would not restart and the truck had to be towed to the dealership.

As far as I know my caddy doesn't have the urea tank, altering the software in the states is one thing but imagine the cost of a recall to install the kit to European spec vehicles without the hardware!

Only the 2.0 litre now so mine isn't affected after all if that's correct.

All OEMs use this strategy.
