Hi, I am looking at buying a 64 mini traveller, but obviously it doesn't have rear seatbelts. My kids are 6 and 10 so really need to be strapped down! Has anyone had anything made up to get around this? Would it affect the MOT exempt rules? Some one mentioned it might as it is a body mod..

the first issue you have is there are no mounts in the rear to attach any belts to. so any that you make will not have been tested/approved.

Hi,

I've seen lap belts fitted in the rear of an estate. The centre mounts were bolted through the spare wheel well with spreader plates underneath, outer mounts in the side of the wheel arch I think?

6 year old still has a car seat so would need to get "proper" belts in. Found this blog about Australian minis, might look at a rear roll cage and mounting off that...

They don't need a booster seat in a mini with no belts, I've seen it being calculated, its technical, too technical to do at the roadside

When I was little my dad had a Clubman Estate which is the same in the back as a traveller, we had rear seat belts and I think he bolted them into/through the rear arches.

 

I have just had the same issue with my MK2 jag and I fitted these https://www.ebay.co....oAAOSweNNZmCSk 

 

I mounted to solid parts of the car and the spreader plate gives you a bit more comfort, they just take a standard seatbelt bolt.  Only problem is that you need someone on the other side to hold them!

Hi,

There's certainly nothing above seat base level in the rear of an estate that's a strong enough to mount seat belts to have a full 3 point belt. You can't really expect it in car that didn't legally require 3 point front seat belts until '65 let alone rears.

I understand your concern for safety but if you're going to put a rear cage in an estate you'll find that difficult whilst retaining the rear seats...

I think we had a topic ages ago where somebody liberated upper belt mountings from a Volvo 240 Estate. Of course, there'd still be a fair old job in engineering them in securely.

Hi,

The .mount is no problem its something on the car that will take the forces involved in an accident. It's something like speed x weight of grand brat in my case

Would a custom half cage fitted be good enough to mount from? Have spoken to a local race car builder who thinks this would be a viable option. It could be built as not to be too intrusive aesthetically.
