Regrading the sc componets 5 bearing.

Is there gonna be a market for new standard cast iron blocks and heads in the future as bits get rare.

Nearly every part of a mini can be got new now....

SC are doing both from what John K mentions on the FB comments

Cheers mab01uk but the Cast Iron versions are still a long way off from what I've been told.

Yes, apparently the prototypes were done in alloy to check the patterns only. But they came out so well that it was worth machining one up to see if it would go together. Eventually cast iron version will be supplied by Minispares all machined, c/w all steel main caps line bored & honed to size.

To produce these new blocks and heads do they have to be made under some kind of licence from BMW.

Does anybody hold the licence or whatever denotes ownership to the A series engine?

I think BMH hold and control the licences, use of trademarks, etc for classic Mini parts on behalf of BMW:-

"British Motor Heritage Limited was established in 1975 to support owners and the marketplace by putting genuine components for classic British cars back into manufacture, using original tools wherever possible. Since 2001, when the company was acquired from BMW, it has been successfully run as an independant company.

British Motor Heritage owns the Heritage trademark together with MOWOG, Nuffield, Standard, Stanpart and Steelcraft marks and the Heritage Motor Parts brand, and is licensed by the trademark owners to use MG, Mini, Austin-Healey, Triumph, Rover, Austin, Morris, Riley, Vanden Plas, Wolseley, Special Tuning and BMC trademarks and logos. Through its approval process, it is responsible for the licensing of vehicle, merchandise and publishing products and outlets using the non-current trademarks and logos originally owned by vehicle manufacturers. It is a Member of the Institute of Vehicle Engineers – SAE UK and Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs."

"HERITAGE® not only manufactures bodyshells, panel work and components for classic cars, it also has a responsibility to promote and defend the famous marques that have been, or are still, part of the Britain's motoring history."

Wouldn't it be nice, if Heritage celebrated 60 years by producing 60 stainless shells.

Won't any kind of IP on this engine long since expired?

Yes, they are coming, just don't hold your breath.

It's probably gonna have to go that way. Only so long supplies of existing blocks and heads will last.

Be expensive at start but as second hand blocks start to filter down...

If somebody goes to that much trouble it could make sense to incorporate a few design improvements so they can take out their own IP protection. Though it could well be the market won't be big enough to justify the cost.

It'd make sense for SC to do a casting that can be machined for their BMW head conversion from the outset, but isn't the largest potential market in historic race classes, both transverse and inline?

Well if you can find a way to do something new, but given that pretty much everything has been tried already you might end up trying to take IP out on an process that was done 30+ years ago.
