Hi All.

I'm getting to grips with planning a full rebuild and I want to tart up all of the suspension (subframes, radius arms, hubs etc etc) whilst I'm doing the body shell.

Using a front hub housing as an example....the question is this.....once I've media blasted all of the years of crud and corrosion away and we have a beautiful bare metal object, what is the best stuff to paint onto these to make them last?  I've used Hammerite in the past and it has been OK, but I was wondering if there is something better?  I don't want to powder coat because the car is a rally car so will need a refresh every now and then and I don't want the expense of recoating when I could give it a lick of paint for not a lot of money.

I was thinking a good epoxy primer first then a satin black top coat or something.

Any advice or experience??  Or shall I just stick with Hammerite and keep things simple.

not sure how it will hold up, but after blasting I am using etch primer and 2-3 coats of satin black aerosol paint. I did consider epoxy and 2k gloss but don't want the hassle of mixing paint, I find it easy to get parts done a few at a time using this method. But my car is not going to see much wet weather anyway. On the silver parts like master cylinders and brake disc centres I have been using cold galvanising paint

I am however having the frames powder coated gloss black, My blasting cabinet isn't big enough for those.

On mine i'm using hammerite no.1 rust beater primer (seems to bond pretty well with the surface rust on some components) and then brush painting on satin black 2k. If I wanted a less poisonous option I would probably go for a good chassis black enamel

I have used tractor enamel on mine. Looks good but car isn’t on the road yet so don’t know how good it will hold up.

I’ve used this in the past and was very impressed. Can apply with brush or spray.

could give it a smear of oil save the cost of paint on some of the parts

oil will get into every crevice it cannot rust further and  will look great every time its given a clean down

I am a great advocate of using a light coloured paint.  Not much light gets round the back of the engine and most work shops are not well lit, so I Hammerite my sub-frame and the back of the engine bay white and do the hubs, wishbones etc: with aluminium  paint, but as Daz mentions, 'cold galvanize' is very good on bare metal.

I’ve tried 2 coats etch, 2 regular and 2 satin coat - gave a great finish

Alternatively, I’ve really well cleaned up the parts, some poor metal prep and 2 coats of POR 15. Great hard wearing stuff. Though I’m told it can bloom a bit if exposed to sun. Haven’t had that issue on the underside of a car!!

What is the best etch primer easily available to your average member of the public? Was looking at using Lechler when I paint my shell... Any others to consider?
