It's a retro grade step to go back to the older starter. The later pre engaged type is a higher torque unit and is much more able to crank a higher compression engine.

Would it work though?

I can make the swap back when the time comes to change the clutch?

I'm looking for the simplest optìon...

I do appreciate though it might not be the best method from an engineering perspective.

Yes it will mesh and crank. What type of engine do you have?

I've got a 998 a plus which I believe to be from a metro. Looks bog standard and has cam4810 head

I bought it as a used runner to drop straight in using the ancilliaries from my 1990 a plus auto. (I'm doing a conversion)

However the starter motor I have is pre engaged. It seems the flywheel on my new engine is the inertia 107 tooth type.

I'm Trying to keep within a budget so wondering what my best option is. The car is going to be a fairweather one and only do a few thousand miles a year...

I'm doing the work in my garage. I'm not set up with oxy equipment for changing ring gear etc.

Just fit the inertia motor. You will have to wire in a solenoid to make it work. Or remove the flywheel and buy a new ring gear. I charge £25 to remove and refit them.

The chap I got it from had told me he is going to change the flywheel to one with a pre engaged flywheel so hopefully that should sort it. Thanks for the help though. I've learnt something new.
