right so off I went today to post office with v112 form filled in to declare mot exempt ,also had v5 so post office could alter it to historic tax , all she did was look at v112 ,filled in v5 at the bottom altering tax section to historic vehicle , and ink stamped it at the bottom of v5 , she then taxed it free for a year , and she will send of v5 to dvla to be altered to historic hope this helps others in doing this

when you next tax it, it should be auto exempt of tax and mot, I don't think you have to change it on the V5 for this to happen.

yep they still want 112 quid a year online to tax it mate

£112 where did you get that figure from? thought it was £160 https://www.gov.uk/v...re-1-march-2001

Revival thread.....

So.. working on a friend's mini van registered on1 August 1980. So unable to confirm if build prior to 1st January for the tax exemption, I get that.

But the vehicle is defiantly more than 40 years old now....

So does that make it not exempt nd not tax exempt yet?

POST OFFICE played a blinder and were completely non committal.

DVLA i have been unable to get through...

Should we just fill in a v112 form and chance it?

Has anybody tried to sort the MOT exemption whilst the car is already tax free?

I renewed the tax on my 66 earlier in the year. And a little clicky box came up saying 'would you like to make this vehicle mot exempt'... i clicked yes, carried on through the tax process, yet the DVLA sight still shows my MOT is due to run out?

Yeah that’s correct, your MOT will run out but then your vehicle if registered as historic becomes exempt so will show on Dvla systems as legal but with no end date to the mot. It will just show the last mot as expiring on X/October/2020

..as above, the car has to be 40years or older at the beginning of the year.  yours wasn't 40years old at jan 1st 2020 so isn't eligible, but will be next year

It would help if the DVLA online MOT records showed a qualifying vehicle as being MOT exempt rather than 'MOT expired' in a bright red warning notice. Presumably the police have access to the correct records rather than the online version we see when checking a car's MOT status?
That said I keep the MOT on my 68 up to date for peace of mind.

Way i kinda see it is the car will get an mot each year for piece of mind more than anything. And another years worth of tax for it to be exempt for the rest of its days is a small price to pay.
