Hi everyone, i'm new to the forums so i'm sorry if this post is not in the correct place.

I have a 1293 spi engine that i built myself but unfortunatley crashed the car almost 2 years ago.

I have now got a new mini (1991, so not an spi) and i have fitted my 1293 spi engine and wiring into it.

The problem i have is that it will not start.
The engine turns over fine.
It has fuel.
It has spark.
It has a good earth.
The timing and compression is good.
Ht leads are in the correct places.

I have also checked all the usual spi sensors such as the coolant temp, crank sensor and air filter sensor. The engine did about 2,000 miles before the accident and i have not taken it apart, only swapped it into the new car.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Check the fuel lines on missorder,possibly swapped!

I've just checked the fuel lines and they are all in the right place

I have checked that as well. It's getting fuel to the injector.

Yes, i have to keep drying them

was something off the engine like clutch or distributor?

The distributor was left in place. I had the flywheel off to replace the seal behind it.

i fear you didn`t place the flywheel correct, there are some threads here about that.

If the flywheel is on wrong would i still get fuel and spark? Because if i disconnect the crank sensor i no longer get fuel to the injector

Yes but at the wrong position.You could possibly check that if you turn the engine that piston one is at its highest position.Take off the crank sensor, you should see a crack in the flywheel.Please confirm this at other place (haynes or forum) as I never had to do that.

is a thread about that.But I know some people could manage it to have the flywheel on the wrong position.

As well sometimes firing order was wrong.

I have had a similar problem when starting my spi engine for the first time since rebuild last weekend.

I had fuel and spark, but the car wouldnt start.

 

The problem was the distributor shaft which was in the wrong position. When putting the distributor shaft in place, piston1 (timing chain side) must be at TDC on compression stroke. The position of the distributor shaft is indicated in the haynes manual.

Once the distributor shaft position corrected, the car started immediatly. 

 

That is my personal experience, hope it helps.

 

I thought it was impossible to get the flywheel on the wrong position since its design prevent it..?. ( thanks to the flywheel keyway locating plate, which locates the flywheel relatively to the crankshaft).

It is true that a wrong flywheel position would cause the same symptoms as a wrong distributor shaft position.
