I would try changing or swapping the relay first, easier than changing the switch.

Temperature sender (brown on one by the thermostat) isn't being read by the ECU. Becuase the ECU doesn't know how hot the engine is, it's running in 'safe mode' to stop over heating. Sometimes it's the sensor, but ussually it's the loom. The connector that clips on the sender is rubbish and there's a new connector that rover made (sold by minispares) that has a longer wire longer and has a better connector. Quite pricey for what it is, but it's your best bet. Rover made this because the problem was properly recognised and they sent out a memo and everything.
I had this issue and I replaced the sensor trying to save some cash. It worked for a week for 2 but then the fan kept coming on again and I had to buy the loom. When I use the old sensor it works just fine, so that was a waste of £13!
You need this.

Would the above problem by the faulty switch not being read by the ECU, cause engine surge...mine as of late whilst driving in 2nd, seems to be holding back in power and then ok..repeatedly...some days its ok?
It has..
newish plugs..(6 months old correct gap)
just over a year old plug leads
And a same shape (as the standerd) K&N air filter (cleaned and re-oiled about 6 months ago)
Adjusted the tappets about a month ago.
Any help would be great..
(If any mods want's me to start a new thread, please PM me 1st, so i can copy/paste what iv already typed)...thankyou

My MPI had the exact same problem. I solved it by cleaning the coolant sensor plug with wires. So try it out!

And yup it works, the fan is now only kicking in when it needs to, not all the time.
Also the engine seems to idle better and run better...(the old one must have been telling the ecu somthing) maybe someone could elaberate for me ??
the fix is easy, with limeted amount of mechanical/electical knowlege only took me 40 minutes
All good

Ok i fitted the new sensor and cut and replaced the old harness with the new one...

Elaboration!
If the sensor or wiring fails to the temperature sender it cause the fail safe or limp home mode to activate. This mode causes the fan to run all the time (just in case the engine is overtemp). The ECU also increases the fuel as the engine might be cold (a little like the choke being on) this causes bad fuel economy and more frequent trips to the petrol station. You sometimes see a mod chip on fleebay that states it will increase engine output in seconds for really cheap this is normally a resistor that sits in circuit with the coolant temperature sender and tells the ecu its running colder than it is, thus increasing the fuel. Chances are it wont make any differance to the bhp though.
is this ok for you
