It is perfectly legal to drive to the MOT station without road tax as long as you are driving to a booked appointment. It's written on the back of the MOT or the tax disc or renewal or somewhere like that.

Side Note:
Talking about tax, I was on a Basic Rate tax code for most of last year, so I sent off forms in the middle of May to get what I overpaid them back. Rang them up a couple of weeks ago and said it would still be 4 or 5 weeks before they got to my mail!!! If they wanted tax from me that I hadn't paid I'd get thrown in jail if I didn't pay it within a couple of weeks!!!
