right guys, ive got the mini pretty much complete, and its ready to go for its MOT.
now its been off the road for the past 3/4 years, and i have obviously no road tax.
ive just sent off to the DVLA to get the v5 changed for the new engine, does this mean i have to wait for the dvla to send me back my v5 before i can get it taxed and get it to the MOT station?
have i just cocked up?

Yup, as you need the V5 to tax the car unless you have the renewal slip, the alternative is to go to a local DVLA office and see what they say...
You will still need to get it MOT'ed before you tax it anyway.

Kinda stupid on the part of the DVLA: to drive a car to the MOT station it has to be taxed, but to tax it is must be MOT'd

i've always thought you were ok to drive to a MoT station without tax? so long as you have a pre-arranged appointment and valid insurance.
Also if you send anything to DVLA by recorded delivery, you usually get it back within 5 days, my record for getting a V5 back is 3 days!!

I drive to MOT's without TAX, what are you ment to do ? push it ???
Basically, as Matt's pointed out, it's "Catch 22",
As long as the MOT is pre-arranged you can drive to and from it...
Using that principle I once drove a Merc from Rugby to Norwich on the fact that it had a pre-arranged MOT in Norwich the next day, no Tax nor MOT..
The only thing I would say is make sure it's insured.

The only problem being that most insurance companies will not pay out on an accident as insurance is invalid without tax or MOT!
The only answer is to trailer it to an MOT Testing station, hope it passes then go and get your tax (on the bus!).

For that Norwich trip, I rang the insurance company, and they said it was OK, and likewise with grotbag, it was insured before MOT'ed and Taxed, simple answer is aslong as they know beforehand, then there should not be an issue, if there is they will tell you !
*Edit*
Hang on a moment... If you have all the documentation (v5 etc) and means of payment on you, you can drive as though you are driving to the post office to pay for the tax.. I remeber going to the police station with the blue one to ask them, as I needed to drive to Northampton in it to the local DVLA office to get it's classification changed to historic and get my FREE  Tax disk...
I had V5, MOT and Insurance on me.

i know and understand this is not a recommendation of the mini forum, to do so, but do you think im ok to drive to a pre-arranged MOT without road tax? as i have no obvious means to get the car to the testing station without a trailer.
its going to take up to 4 weeks to get my v5 back

Personally, I'd check whether there were any of them "tax dodger" camera thingies on the route to the MOT tester station and take the risk.
Thats just me though
Your call at the end of the day.
