I am currently replacing the steering rack on my 1990 classic Austin mini Mayfair, however the axle points on my car have perished and therefore Ii have lifted the car using the front subframe. I have removed the horseshoe bolts form the steering arm there is no wheel assembly attached as I have striped down my engine meaning the last step to removing the steering rack is to pull it out of the subframe... One problem though, the pinion is in the way and I can not manoeuvre the steering arm ou...

    You can't remove the steering rack without unbolting and dropping the back of the subframe down a couple of inches or so.....

    Like mad01uk said, you have to drop the rear of the subframe a few inches. Having jacked up on the subframe, place some axle stands with large wood braces across where the front of the floor / bulkhead meet. You can brace the engine using a jack and large piece of wood to.
