Why do some brain dead idiots instantly assume and start taking the piss when a cars bonnet is open. Coming out with crap like “Are you trying to get the engine to work again?" or “your car must be really crap/unreliable”.

I get it from people at work when I check my car over in the car park. There is a reason I do it at work. Their car park is flat where as my drive is on a slope.
