I've seen a few companies do a turbo that mounts in the back of the car and runs the aircharge up to the engine. Mostly for late model cars, this seems that it would work on a Mini so you won't have to fit the turbo inside the engine bay and there is plenty of room at the back of the car. I'd love to do a turbo 1293 in my Morris Cooper, but since it is a '65 I'd prefer not to cut it up. The other thought was a supercharger system, but I have always wanted a turbo car and this could make it a possibility.

I talked to a company that specializes in rear mounted turbos yesterday. They have two different units, one that is good for 1000cc engines and one that is good for up to 1400cc engines. It seems that their design is specifically engineered for rear mounting. They guy told me that if I were to run a 1275 with 9:1 CR I could run about 5 to 8 psi of boost and the full boost would come on around 2,500 to 3,000 rpm. If I did lower compression then I could go up to 10psi of boost. All this without the need of an intercooler!

gotta be worth a shot mate, at least you won't have to butcher your shell to find out.

There's a company over here that makes a manifold to fit a T2 turbo into the engine bay without bulkhead mods but its £350 for just the manifold and downpipe so would be hugely expensive by the time it got to the states and then there's still a lot of fabrication involved too.

They told me that their universal kit will work and it comes with an internally waste gated unit so it is more compact. Going to cost me about 950GPB to 1,350GPB (roughly calculated from US Dollars) for the kit depending on how much I want to fabricate. I am planning on doing up my '65 Cooper with it's Austin Allegro 1275 at first, then when I get it sorted then I can do another kit up for my '67 998 Elf.

Thanks guys for helping me find the thread on TurboMinis. I'm going to see if I can contact the guy from Colorado and pick his brain about what I need to do.
The specific turbos that are with the different kits are the GT22 for up to a 1400cc and the GT18 for up to 1000cc if anyone is interested.
Cheers!

I am still vacillating on which car I should turbo charge. I think doing my 998 Elf would be a blast since no one would expect a prim and proper car could kick their butts! Or do my "65 Cooper. Both would be great fun, but I am leaning now to my Elf.

Roofless, I really like your "Old Grey" graphic. That would be an awesome paint scheme.

i understand this setup was pioneered on old corvettes(sp?) maybe a company closer to home would be good for you?, it is just some thing i have been told dont know how true but its worth asking questions over in the usa and maybe save some big cash  ,
