When I first saw the rear mount idea I initally thought of all the problems that you say, however, in the states this is a common mod and all the issues have been resolved.

In fact when you start thinking about it in detail , most aren't actually problems. the puddle one potentially is, but the turbo will be running much cooler at the back.

As I think I may have said, ther rear turbo idea is used in the states to get around a law that restricts you modding the exhaust manifold (or something like that). If you don't have this restriction , then sticking the turbo close to the engine is the best idea. The rer mount is doable, but it's a compromised design with no benefit.

There is a law in the US that restricts the modification of factory installed Catalytic converters on exhaust systems. You can get an after market high flow replacement unit, but still need to run one if the car was so equipped from the factory. The rear mounted turbo allows for a mounting after the Cat and in many cases won't void a factory warranty on the un-modified part of the engine and exhaust. Of course this does not apply to Minis here in the US.

I had a turbo system like this on my 106 GTi at the end of last year. Remote mount is what you are on about and 90% of the time it is used becaue there is lack of space in the engine bay for a turbo so its remotely mounted in the exhaust system so that a turbo can be run withought having to cut and chop the engin bay about. This is why i did it on the 106, due to the engine bay size.

It maysound sill but the hardest bit i found s finding a company which would make oil lines long enough to reach the turbo in the rmote mount position. I tried to findavehicle which had long oil feed pipes but it was non-exsistant! In the end i got some made by a company called megaquip orsomethingIIRC.

I found theset up to be extremely laggy, we played with the set up a lot to try and compensate for the lag but it was just no good at all.

When i first set out with the remote mount was because i started talking to a compny who had remote mountd a 205 GTi and had some very mpresive power results for not much wonga. To get the system working properl i could have mpay to have had a TU4 turbo built with forged and lowered pitons and i am sure it would have been much moe rewarding!

All thats said though there are some HUGE power cars in the states running turbos so late in the system that they are practicaly the last thing in the system! The one i have in mind isa twin turbo M3, i would link a photo but it will take me weeks to find the photo again!

If it came to do it again i wouldnt give the remote mount a second thought!
