I`m running a 296 in a 1330 with a 45 weber, tickover is 1000-1100rpm, revs like crazy and i love it!!

really? i guess my timeing and fueling is off. i can get it that low but the ignition light flickers on and off.

so lemme get this right, saying your engine is turning at 1100 rpm 18.3 times a second, your aux belt it turning thus turning your alternator and your light is coming on...time for a new alternator really, diode is gone on the inside, or the winding are breaking down internaly

a "lairy" cam is very dependable on alot of things! i cant see how people arent even saying that! as you open up the bore, it tends to of sorts, even out the cam making it more workable...among alot(alot alot) of other stuff

Aye, i think it might be my alternator, kind of sound like the engine dies then picks up again when it does it.

the alternator is a good shout as when i flash my full beams my radio turns off for a second or so.

So many answers and so much more to think about!

Thanks for all your advice everyone, I'll read through all of the answers again tomorow and try to get my head round everything. I guess cams are something that nobody can ever agree on - it's up to personal preference I guess... Think I'll stick with the standard MG cam until I am absolutely sure what I want.

Oh, and to answer the questions on driving style... I'm blessed with living and owrking in the countryside, so I drive in town only very occasionally. That said, I'd prefer something quick off the lights (low down to mid range) than faster at the top end, and fuel economy isn't really a big issue. I've had Jap cars in the last few years between Minis, so I'm used to revving the engine to get the most out of it, but I don't want the thing spitting valves out on me!

Oh, and I'm certainly not after power figures and stuff to show my mates down the pub. Doesn't seem worth it - I'd rather have a car that's fun to drive than one that only looks good on paper. I'm starting to think that the SW5 or 276 would be good choices, as they seem to come up on every single post about cams in this place.

the 276 is a whole diffrent animal compared to the sw5, sw10 isent so bad however (quite like a 286)

Well, having had the following cams in the same engine, I can categorically say the 296 scatter I have in there now is the best of the bunch...

Std GT, 266, 286 and 296 Scatter...

It's a 1330 with a fairly std 1300 GT head, HIF44, Aldon Yellow dizzy and sport coil, Cam timed in @ 106 degrees, ultralight flywheel and ST Helical GT box on the bottom...

Was dyno'ed on Southams Rollers earlier in the year and even tho' suffering low comression on number 1 was still pulling nearly 85 at the wheels.

Idles fairly comfortably about 12-1300, easy to drive round town, bit like an economy 998 as you don't get much under 3000, get between 3 and 4k and hold on as it's there all the way past 6, don't need to go anywhere near 8k to get peak power and when accelerating you can keep it well on cam...

Here's a copy of the dyno results... from that day at southam

Hi,

I have a Kent 296 scatter cam - is an electronic fuel pump essential, also would you suggest a fuel filter?

Thanks

Jon

Nope, I run a good old mechanical fuel pump through to an HIF44, don't get any fuel starvation at all.....

Incredibly similar to our figures guessworks. And i see you have had the same results with the 296 as we have, in fact I remember you urged me to keep the 296 and advised me on timing and other issues, which i followed and now have a car pulling 99 at the wheels (at the time with a slipping clutch).
I find it amazing that there are so many negative comments from people who have never even run this cam before, with the right tuning this cam is really awesome!

Well the new cam for the next engine arrived last week... 310 Scatter... think it's time to ditch the dizzy and go DTA...

If your running that sort of spec then use a eletric type pump you will then need a fuel regulator to control the fuel pressure, if you use a filter king type this has a filter built in!

EDIT; Use either pump as guessworks has no problems!
