I'm using AVG Free 8.0 and up until a few days ago all was fine. But now when I start up my computer, the task-bar AVG icon displays an exclamation mark and when I open the user interface it says that 'Update Manager' is disabled.

Up until this problem occured it would automatically update and run a full system scan every day.

But if I manually update AVG, the warning messages clear or at least until I start up my computer again.

I have tried uninstalling AVG completely and reinstalling, but the problem still remains.

So what is going on, is this now normal running for the free software or has something gone terribly wrong?

The advance settings schedule box (under tools) is now blank too, so I don't know if that's normal?

I'm using this and I'm having no problems.

I've just checked the "overview" screen and the update manager is ticked as active.

one thing you could try is to "system restore" your PC to a date before the problems started

yeh im using the free one
however it constantly says the database's are both out of date and currently it says there are no new updates for it
so i always av a warning message =[
luckily its only on the desktop as i dnt use it on my laptop but the problem is still annoying as AVG is usually quite good

Mine is ticked as active now, at least it is when I manually update it. Then the icon in the task-bar loses it's exclamation point too.

Hopefully AVG will sent an update fix or something? I don't really want to use system restore.

Yes I don't want to use that, but not only has it stopped updating automatically, but now it's not doing an automatic system scan too.

It was starting up at around 12 noon, but now nothing.

AVG are no longer supporting free downloads IIRC. You could try Avast instead. It is also very good and still supports free downloads of it's database updates!

Thanks and that does make sense. I don't really mind having to manually update it, but I just wanted to know that it wasn't broke that's all.

It's strange that the schedule scan option is also frozen and the option boxes are no longer usable under 'Computer Scanner'. Their frozen.

So is that now normal too?

Well I did get the same problem as these people here: -

http://freeforum.avg...7,backpage=,sv=

And even uninstalling and reinstalling has done nothing to solve it.

I got fed up with AVG and installed 'AntiVir' instead. It's based on the Kaspersky code and I find it to detect more problems than AVG and easier to use.

well i had the problem of the datebase not updating when i av AVG v7.5 so i decided to update to 8.0 and the problem still continues so i take it that Stronteum Dog is right in saying what he has said.

shame really because i thought avg was good and have been using it for a while now

Make sure your Firewall is not stopping AVG from accessing the internet !!
