There's also Software Explorer that Service pack 3 added to the Control Panel if you're running XP.

My step dad soon realised there is a missing part to the software... I did a scan the other day and found tons of infected files but AVG just wouldn't remove them. Its the removal of infected programs/files that AVG software is missing.. i really need to find another anti virus

I've currently got 181 infected files, but thankfully, not virus nor trogens, but I need a decent "free" anti-virus!

I can't see it being a change of policy by AVG. The Auto update will just be a scheduled task of the program running on your PC, I doubt it will interface with the AVG servers any differently to a manual update. If it also doesn't auto scan I'd suspect it's down to a good old Windoze update tinkering with your settings. Select scheduled tasks from system tools in your accessories menu 'n see if AVG has anything listed. If it hasn't find the folder where AVG is installed and look for the programs you need - start them manually, as you would normally, and use task manager (ctrl-alt-delete) to try and spot the processes you need to run.
There's also Software Explorer that Service pack 3 added to the Control Panel if you're running XP.
There's nothing showing up under scheduled tasks at all. I'm using Vista.
I did recently defrag and run a scan disk (error checking), so I don't know if that has attributed to the problems?

I can still manually update AVG though and manually run a virus check.

Like I said earlier, you could all try "Avast" as it is very good and FREE! Unlike AVG now

It wants credit card details no matter what you do on that link.

I use avast server edition at work till we invest in some decent software, as previous I opened an e-mail that had a rootkit installer that ran on prompt, thus dropping a couple of trojan downloaders with massive payloads that really screwed up my OS annoyingly enough one of the little beggers went after the kernel!

thos updates conflict with the virus software, in turn it shuts down the updates on the virus software stoping you from keeping it maintained.
there are only 2 ways round this
A) delete updates and turn off windows update
go to: control panel/ add and remove programs
click the little box at the to called (also show updates)
check out the dates the last updates where installed and un install any updates from that date
NOW THIS IS WHERE IT GETS A BIT TRICKY (TURNING OFF WINDOWS UPDATES)
To turn off the Windows Update feature, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options
3. Right-click Image File Execution Options, point to New, and then click Key.
4. Type wupdmgr.exe to name the new subkey.
5. Right-click wupdmgr.exe, point to New, and then click String Value.
6. Type Debugger to name the new string value.
7. Double-click Debugger, type ntsd -- in the Value date box, and then click OK.
8. Quit Registry Editor.
B) just find an ati virus proggy that works with the updates
HOPE THIS HELPED

So now it's back to working properly again, with automatic updating and an automatic daily virus scan.
Weird or what? Perhaps AVG realised that not everyone wants to buy their product perhaps?
Anyway the problem I now have is it keeps on recognising one of my important cookies as a threat and removes it to the virus vault and then deletes it!
I want to leave that cookie where it is, as it's the statcounter cookie that puts a stop on me adding hits to the hit counter on my websites.
So does anyone now how I can prevent AVG free from deleting that statcounter cookie? (I've looked in the help section, but it all just confuses me).
