The car is running much better now, the temp gauge goes a little over N but not to halfway between N and H. BUT sometimes antifreeze does shoot out of the engine compartment and onto my windshield. Could it be that there is just too much antifreeze in the radiator and when it gets to a certain temp it comes out the overflow?

No, the excess should flow down the drain tube and out under the car. Unless you don't have a drain tube fitted, I suppose it could squirt up the windscreen from where it is. Look at the rad neck, there is a small pipe stub sticking out of the side of it just below the cap. Should have a piece of hose connected to it running down the side of the rad and ending level with the rad bottom edge.

If not, I can't think what it is. I assume you changed the oil when you did the head gasket?

Does it squirt once in a while or all the time. If its all the time, Leaky chaffed hose??????????? Or gasket. I presume you have replaced the rad so there should be no leaks there. If its only once in a while then its likely to be what Dan said, the overflow on the rad neck is not being discharged below the car. There is a metal hoop inside the rad just under the cap, the coolant should just be level with this when the engine is cold, any more and it will spew it out as the coolant expands. Oh and is the rad cap up to the job, rusty spring, perished seal????????

Glad to hear you're getting to the bottom of the problem :P

No we haven't changed the radiator yet, and I think 77LeylandMini said that I don't have the gasket/tube that directs the overflow under the car...
