I was hoping to see pictures of minor fretting of the crank tail. Sorry... I agree with everyone above. Replace the crank and move on.

The garage that repalaced the ringear would appear to have *graped* up when replaceing the flywheel,

you need to prove this, you will need you local mini specialist to back you up , if he does , you have a bit more weight behind you, but the ringear replacer will deny any wrong doing and then the battle comences,

so MEd are looking to charge you 400 notes to replace the crank, was it stamdard or modified.

My local mini chap said its open and shut as so far as the garage's negligence goes. From racing minis for years he said he has never had a pre verto fly stuck on so well.

The garage suggested that the engine was built incorrectly- so MED are backing me too if it does get ugly. The garage themselves said that minis were a bit before they're time afterwards, and they had they're young apprentice on the job too, if I remember correctly.

The crank was fully modded- re ground, x drilled, back drilled, wedged, bladed, balanced and hardened. Cost £360 (i think) plus surcharge of £75 plus postage plus how much it would cost for new bearings and fitting...

its tricky they could argue that the damage on the crank was a result of the bolt backing off

did they fit the flywheel originaly or was fitted by a 3rd party?

also what states the crank damper in?

They could, but Steve from MED told me there was no way it would come undone with the correct torque setting. With his experience, I believe him. Besides I have a photo of the bolt in the wrong way round.

The whole engine was a brand new rebuilt by MED, fly included. So I guess that the crank damper is in a good condition.

This local garage removed the fly and re fitted it when the new ring gear was put on.

Dont know what else to say without covering the same ground...

Would trading standards be of help?

Write to them explaining that you've been told the crank is damaged as a result of them incorrectly fitting the flywheel key washer and ask them what they'll do about it. Hopefully they'll at least write back with something that admits they did. They should have commercial insurance so they may be happy to cough up.
