they are not jacking points...

The square section flats which are on the floor pan are jig points from where the car was originally made..

The only jacking point on a mini is the hole in the sill adjacent to the cross member under the front seat.

when doing maintenance on a mini it should be jacked up on the subframes.

However if you do mean the ones behind the sill... this is one...

The are made of fairly heavy gauge metal ( must be about 1/16" thick ), I have a heritage one kicking about somewhere and that's quite heavy.

I'm restoring a mini at the moment and have removed the jacking points - the ones between the sills. I am going to plate behind the holes in the outer sills.

Can I get away without the jacking points? - as I am never going to use them or are they there to add structural strength to the sill areas etc. They are fitted at each end of the crossmember so am wandering if they are there for another pupose - to add strength. I am using replacement sills, not oversills.

I also would like to know the answer to this question as mine are rotten, but there's no chance I'll ever need to use them.

THEY AREN'T JACKING POINTS !!

they're there to hold the inner and outer sills together, to leave them out is just stupid
i'm putting a full floor on in a couple of weeks and am planning on putting an extra one on each side close to the door pillar

I think people are getting a little confused here, the piece in the picture that Guessworks put up at the start of the thread is a jacking point, and can be removed if wanted, I have removed them from my own mini's, I never use the jacking points and they seem to be an area which always rusts quickly! If you were after originality, then I'd keep/replace them, but if you're not bothered then it's up to you. There are other sections inside the sill at either end, which most definitely NOT be removed, they are structural.

Thanks Peter :).

I don't suppose you know what the parts that should not be removed are called? Mine have had it.

My Mk1 had 'something structural' connnected between the inner and outer sill about 2" (5 cm) or so in front of the heelboard just in front of the heelboard inner sill strengthening lug. I can't describe them as they got mangled and were seriously corroded on removal. Could I make up something out of sheet steel?

Yeah so long as you know where they were, and as long as you used the right gauge metal it should be fine. I'm afraid I don't know what those bits are called, give M machine a ring if you need to know, they're good with stuff like that.
