If it's the standard kind, then try using a trolley jack to hold the pipe up.

What I've always done is to have the jack just touching the downpipe, then get everything ready and to hand. With one hand put some exhuast sealer on round the manifold and downpipe (lots!), then with my foot (it's easier than you'd think!) raise the jack. Doing it like this means you can use your hands to get the pipe in the right position. Once it's all jacked up you can pretty much take your time putting the clamp on... which is good as it can be a right pain. Make sure it's on right, not twisted or only half on.

I've done it sooo many times it's unreal... I can now re-seal the whole thing (including taking the carb off) in under half an hour and have it running again.

another pair of hands! i usually get someone to hold it in place, although last time i did it by myself but it's a bit of a ball ache, never thought uf using jack sounds like it should work.

I never thought of it either, but my friendly garage man showed me! Works really well and holds it up with a nice lot of force.

yeah i used the trolley jack and i had a helping pair of hands but was still a pain in the arse as there is not much room to work in, i smothered the clamp in the exhaust sealer and now sounds sweet
