Model: Mini Flame
Year: 1989
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

Right i got the mini running all fine and dandy but one day it decides to play up on me. Ive just been out now to try and start her but shes having none of it. Ive done all the checks to see if theres any problems example. Checked fuel ( all fine ), Points ( all fine ) spark plugs ( all fine ) theres no loose wiring anywhere so thats not the problem. She goes to start up like when it makes the starting noise then when i let go of the key to stop the starter turning she cuts out then i need to leave it for abit then do it again. Please could someone shead some light, have i missed anything out thanks

So you've got a spark?

Can't be a dead coil then?

Maybe a dodgy condenser?

First thing that came into my head was that the ballast resistance wire may be at fault..

You say its trys to start but then when you let go of the key it stops..Well while the keys is turned you are getting an extra 12v supply to the coil, once you let go of the key you lose that supply and will be running the coil off the ballasted wire.

Are you getting a spark at the points with just the ignition on ?? not trying to turn the starter

If you have a multimeter then check for a voltage on the coil with just the ignition on. want about 7-8 volts

If you haven't, ignition on, just tickle the point contacts with a small screwdriver, should get a spark.

A quick cheat would be to run a wire from the white wire on the fuse box to the positive on the coil.

try start it then. If it starts then problem with ballast wire, which is a case of find the fault.
But don't run a ballasted coil on full 12volts for to long you'll burn it out.
