Having read Sprocket's sticky before changing the clutch I embarked on the job tonight. All went fine until tightening up the pressure plate bolts. Applied loctite, done up finger tight, centre on crank, remove carefully, set Torque to 40ftlb, snap bolt without reaching 40ftlb. AAARRRRRSSSSEEEE!!!!

It is now loctited in and past stage of easy extraction. What do I do? New flywheel? Run on five? (Assuming that is a bad idea but is it possible?) Drill and re-tap?

If I was flush with cash I would buy a lightened fly and new kit but that's not an option at the moment.

Did I mis-read the FAQ and get the wrong torque setting on the wrong bolt?

Help!

Got loads of verto's around if you need one..

The thread was the sticky at the top of the "Tech and Probs" page. I must have mis-read it.

May well need a Verto fly- will see whether I can get the sheared bolt out this morning. Always seems easier after a night of sleep!

Will PM you if I can't sort it.

Thanks!

remove the plate form the flywheel if there is a few mm of bolt still sticking out you can hack saw a slot in it and use a flat blade driver, use some heat to sofen the loctite.

or drill and use easy out with some heat.

Off to try and sort now. I see that Somerford sell the bolts and washers separately. Will be on phone later.....

Right- got sheared bolt out and will order six new ones plus washers later. The originals did not have thread lock of any sort on them- should they have?

Also, double checking that the pressure plate assy to fly bolts are torqued to 18lbft? Don't want to make the same mistake again!

Reading through Sprocket's thread again it was the taper bolts at 40lbft. Misunderstood it hence the problem. First time I have stripped a Mini clutch to feeling my way a little....!

I might be wrong here but i didn't think that you should locktight them because they will get so hot. I thought you should copper slip them to avoid snapping them if you need to take them out again in the future.

I did the same on mine and they do drill out quite easily with a pillar drill and a nice sharp bit.

I got new bolts with the clutch kit (Unipart) when I did my verto last year and the bolts came with locking compound on them. The instructions said to discard the old bolts and use the ones provided.

Ok well ignore me then i must be wrong. I seem to remember thinking that i saw that in the 1380 engine building DVD, but that was on a pre verto, dont know if it makes a difference. When i snapped one i couldent source new bolts anywhere.

In the end i spoke to KAD and they sold me some high temp correct size bolts with allen key heads, so obviousley they are different to the normal type. Do you think these type of head will be ok? I cant see it making a difference but maybe someone knows somthing i dont.

Sorry for the little hijack there

Now have a new problem. Can't get a set of bolts for Verto pressure plate to fly (not the taper bolts). Somerford and Moss are out of stock. Any suggestions?!

I had the same as you, one bolt snapped but that was my fault as torque wrench was not setup properly, I was aiming for 40lbs for the six bolts that hold the pressure plate to the flywheel but found I set a much higher setting. >_<

I couldn't drill out the bolt so got a secondhand flywheel for about £25 and it had the six bolts in them already, try some mini places first like breakers etc

Aim for 40lb as per guide, I did and it was fine, it did seem silly tight and thought it was gonna snap again but didnt. Not sure why yours snapped if you was aiming for 40lb?

18lb is NOT enough to hold the six bolts of the pressure plate onto the flywheel as per Sprockets sticky in this section.

My reading of Sprocket's FAQ is that it is the taper bolts NOT the pressure assy bolts that should be at 40lbft......

John at GW has offered bolts (Cheers, John!) but thanks for the tip!
