Hi,

Didn't know where else to post this!! But here goes!

My mates mini (only posting as he has no access to internet) is a 1991 mini cooper it is ran by a metro 1275! It has no injection and he has recently purchased a single upsweep exhaust with a straight through pipe!

My question is can he legally remove the catalytic converter or will it fail on mot? Asked a few mechanics but I think best thing to do is get a solid opinion from the people who know minis best

It is not illegal, as long as it passes it MoT emissions, it will be fine.

Legally, if it was fitted with a cat from new, then it should be fitted with a cat for the rest of it's life.

It won't fail the MOT test on emissions just because the cat's been removed though, it'll only have to pass a basic emissions test at 1991. It'll have to be a CO of less than 3.5% and a HC of less than 1200ppm IIRC.

Being legal and being in a condition where you could pass an MOT are two very different things!

It's a carb with a cat?
I would have thought a carburettor engine would bring a catalytic convertor to its knees pretty quickly?
The MOT will take account of the engine's age.
Take the cat off before it bungs up.

I've got the same model and I ditched my cat over a decade ago.

Tell him his Mini will run a bit better without it too.
