Iv got a 1995 mayfair and am having problems with the wiring. it has been in the garage but 2 weeks and £100 later its still *melons*d!

it started with the mini not starting and having to "rock" the car in gear to get the ignition lights to flicker on in order to start. also when driving the batt light would flicker on and off. I took it into the garage and they ruled out the starter motor and alternator. they said that they believe the problem lies within the loom and most likely behind the dash. they rekon they were testing the loom for 9 hours with no luck. I now have no headlights, no petrol gauge, no temp gauge and no ignition lights. the garage bi-passd the electrics so that the car would start but in this weather and with no healights thats a chockie tea pot!!!!

im a bit hesitant in ripping out the dash as im a novice and it will more then likely not go back!!!

please please this is driving me nuts please help.

oh and i havnt got the dosh for a auto electrician!

sounds like u have got a bad connection some were the best thing to do is check the wires on the fuse box and clean the fuses . then put the ignition on and start to move the wireing under the bonnet and see if the lights come on if they do the fault is around there some were.if no good take the dash out and do the same thing also check the earth wires under the bonnet.
did the problem just happen or was there things going wrong first!

I would start with checking all multi plug conectors,
if you have a wood dash these are well easy to get out, only 3 nuts.

Also check the earth lead on the battery and the earth lead on the top steady arm to bulkhead.

hi all, not had a chance to look at the wiring yet but was wondering if anyone could tell me how much my car might be worth with this problem. its a 1995 1.3 mayfair, racing green, 13,000 miles, pretty much all original, inside imaculate, slight dent on the boot and in the rear bumper. apart from that its in good condition and has been kept in a garage.

any ideas? unfortunately that space in the garage is gonna be taken up by the van im gonna buy after iv sold the mini.

cheers all

Not sure, but it'll be worth a lot more if the problem is fixed?

With such a low mileage, it's got to be something simple like a bad earth?

FIXED IT!!!! well my brother did anyway. after all the *rubbish* all it was was a dodgy fuse. the one that feeds the batt fault light! and the lights not woring was just down to the stalk sticking a bit!!

so, any ideas what sort of price i should be asking for?

Um welcome to the real world - garage time is charge out whatever.. they dont generaly work on the 'no fix no fee' principle - its simply not possible!

*should* find that the hourly rate should be stated and when the time clicks by the customer is informed accordingly and asked if work is to continue...

9 hours work

well that hourly rate is very cheap for a garage.

I would start by asking for your money back.

Why?

I suppose its one of those things where you need to agree on something before they touch the car. "We'll look at it and see what we can do" is a bit vague (not a quote by the way just an example. It's best to go in there and clarify what exactly they will/might do and what the charges will be, if any depending on what, if anything they do.
