most decent garages will not charge if they cannot fix it.
i have never charged a customer if i could not fix there car.there have not been meny lol.

most garages will charge for time..

picture the scene - "intermittant engine management fault on car... take it to garage to investigate... garage takes 4 hours to diagnose it... customer then doesnt want it fixed as the replacement part is to much and will live with the fault.." - You reckon the garage will say "oh dont worry about it then"?

I suppose its one of those things where you need to agree on something before they touch the car. "We'll look at it and see what we can do" is a bit vague (not a quote by the way just an example. It's best to go in there and clarify what exactly they will/might do and what the charges will be, if any depending on what, if anything they do.

Agreed.
