Not posted on here for ages as everything is running great until this afternoon. I left home and noticed straight away he wasnt running right seemed like he was not getting enough fuel then a few hundred yards down the road i pulled over i had a look under the engine couldnt see anything wrong. Then he wouldn't start when i turned the key, i tried again and gradually he bust into life thick black smoke came out of the exhaust then grey then he ran fine any ideas why this happend.

Sounds like the engine is/was running very rich.
This problem is often caused by a faulty coolant temp sensor and/or intake air temp sensor. It gives the ECU the information that it's colder than it's really is, and the ECU provides more fuel.
I had a similar problem a while ago in combination with a faulty vacuum hose connector, giving a wrong MAP sensor signal
