Is it posible to turbo a mpi cooper, obviously stuff will have to be changed but is it possible without changing the engine

yeah, most things are possible if you've got the cash, a new chip and maybe uprated injectors. Whether it would be worth keeping the injection system is another matter tho.

why do they run better with a carb or what??? HAs nobody done an mpi turbo its just its a fairly good engine so it would be a shame to get a new engine.

you don't need a new engine. you need forged and dished pistons different cam, manifolds take off for an intercooler. It'll just cost less using a carb.

Carb won't pass the emissions for your age car, keep the injection and go Megasquirt ECU. Injection is way better than carb when you are in control of it, unlike the rover silver box

if you can prove the age of the engine then the emissions test is for the age of the engine not the car :smartass:

Turbocharging your existing engine will be difficult, the standard ECU will be no use whatsoever, and running forced induction and injection on a siamese head will be a nightmare. I know people who have tried and seen very little gain, if any, over a carb. And the work/time and money spent doesn't bear thinking about.
Granted, when properly done injection is far superior to a carb, but on our engine with a 5 port head the good old SU takes some beating.
On a 7 or 8 port head things would be much different ....................
As far as i know this is true, so get yourself to the scrapyard and find a low mileage 1275 metro engine and Turbocharge that.
Phil.
