think you need to google how an alternator works

the alt is connected straight to the battery...

the 3 wires coming out = well the 2 large ones are connected together and is the regulated output...
the smaller one energises (excites) the windings..

Essentially uing an alternator with a bigger 'fan' on the end to make a wind generator?

I guess it could be done, but you'd have to work out how much torque you need to put into the alternator and how strong the wind is likely to be, and gauge your blades to suit.

Plus you'd be charging a 12V battery - to use where?

I suppose with a large enough capacity battery and an invertor your could power some small mains items, using an alternator based wind generator

guess you would also need it to pivot so that it always caught the privailing wind

http://www.otherpowe...lternators.html <--worth a read, basically says car alternators not really much cop for wind generators

its gonna be used with a belt and so onto the generator, with a nice battery to power the fish tank...

also gonna power up the iguana's heathlamp with a few solar panels connected together....
