a not very round valve. The rest are ok and there are no bent stems so we'll just grind 'em in and replace the one.

OK, I'm going to go with that because it tallies with what I reckon too. To cut a long story short all the necessary parts plus a few more have been replaced and Huey is now running beautifully on 95 octane with a shot of Castrol Valvemaster LRP. The hammering is still there but my paranoia isn't. Sorry, no further pictures. I feel the tappets now need adjusting but we'll get that done after a good run at the weekend to see how everything else beds down. Thanks to everyone else who has come up with ideas.Although it is good you have found a HG problem (and the valve one) this may not be the cause (or effect) of the hammering.
My 1380 with hotter cam makes a noise similar to what you describe, maybe not as fast as a machine gun but definately hammering rather than pinking - it is also very 'regular' not random like pinking. We've done many investigations and have come to the conclusion it is just the natural bark of the engine when pulling hard through the gears as there is no power or compression lost anywhere.
