Although it is good you have found a HG problem (and the valve one) this may not be the cause (or effect) of the hammering.

My 1380 with hotter cam makes a noise similar to what you describe, maybe not as fast as a machine gun but definately hammering rather than pinking - it is also very 'regular' not random like pinking. We've done many investigations and have come to the conclusion it is just the natural bark of the engine when pulling hard through the gears as there is no power or compression lost anywhere.

What a valve - never seen anything like that!! I guess it's a good excuse to get some new shiny bits, 'Pot.

That valve is quite scary-any ideas what caused it? Any matching clashes on the head? Or is it where the car has been run on unleaded when it shouldnt.....

that head looks like a leaded head, what fuel have you been using and have you been doing many motorway miles???

i think the markings are done by an engineering place when the block/head were skimmed, they just state how much it has been skimmed by, e.g 0.20 thou (thousanths of an inch)

a not very round valve. The rest are ok and there are no bent stems so we'll just grind 'em in and replace the one.

That valve is burn't out a result of the pinking, it needs replacing and then setting up by someone that knows what there doing !

OK, I'm going to go with that because it tallies with what I reckon too. To cut a long story short all the necessary parts plus a few more have been replaced and Huey is now running beautifully on 95 octane with a shot of Castrol Valvemaster LRP. The hammering is still there but my paranoia isn't. Sorry, no further pictures. I feel the tappets now need adjusting but we'll get that done after a good run at the weekend to see how everything else beds down. Thanks to everyone else who has come up with ideas.

If LRP shots are the way to go, it remains a mystery how Huey managed to run so well and so reliably for six years on just unleaded.

Footnote ... the new speedo cable works ... I have a speedo again :)
But now the rev counter has packed up :)

OK, everything is now back on track and my thanks to everyone (especially 998Dave & GraemeC). The rev counter started working again after being disconnected three times and reconnected four times  . Very technical.

Thanks to somebody  who mashed the coolant temp sender while the head was being sent for refacing, the sender has been replaced and suddenly the water temp gauge reads normal for the first time in seven years. Likewise the heater. So I needn't have spent a week last winter experimenting with different thermostats. Doh, etc.

The offending tappet has been tightened and Huey sounds terrific. He is flying.

Now beginning to apply second skin sludge to various panels - probably two coats to start with, then whatever is left over after doing the floor.
