Just been back and read that you don't have the tool. You can't slide the seal along, you have to keep spreading the seal and push the strip down into the gap. Get the tool, seriously. Even the best ones are only £12.00 or so.

Use a lubricant to aid you, washing up liquid, though good for the job, contains salt which is detremental to the bodywork. I use ky or similar

You need to have it set up so that the filler strip comes into it as per this picture.

The tool needs to be much flatter than in the pic though (its hard to hold it and take a photo!), and with your other hand you can hold the strip parallel to the rubber. I found that with it like that, you could push it along fairly easily, and that the back of the diamond actually pushed the strip in without a roller. I did front and rear stips in about 5 minutes or so using this tool and technique. never done it before either.
