How far away can you be from your mpi to activate the alarm with the key fob? I currently have to stand near the front and aim at the dash for mine to work and was wondering if that's the norm?

Mine will work from several feet (4-5) away from the car at any angle. Might be the battery is going or another possibility is that the transmitting crystal is getting weak. There are rebuilders out there that can put in new parts, making it like new again including new rubber bits.

Point it at my head? ;) will it immobilize my eyes? must've missed that episode!

It's too dark and cold to try now but tomorrow I'll try my spare fob to see if it's any better. Pretty sure the battery is going as I also have to press the button quite hard for it to work, like you do when the a remote batteries are flat.

Would somewhere like a watch repairers/key cutting type place sell the battery?

erm markaboot- i think it's radio.....

It is a very common size battery. The manual recommends Panasonic type CR2032, I have only been able to find the panasonic type at watch places and the rest are other brands.
